If you are a physician who suspects your patient may have Myositis, please visit our For Physician section.

New Patients

New patients can expect the following at their first visit to the Myositis Center:

  1. When preparing for an appointment, have your referring provider fax or e-mail your pertinent medical records to our intake center. Intake fax number is 410-367-2371 and e-mail is PASonBaseRheuma@jhmi.edu.
  2. It is a requirement of the Myositis Center that our doctors review (triage) your records before being scheduled for an appointment. This is so they can arrange for additional tests if necessary and verify that you would benefit from a visit to the Center.
  3. After the doctors’ review (triage) your chart, and approve your appointment, a medical office coordinator will contact you to schedule an appointment, as well as further testing if necessary. Usually, all will be made on one or two consecutive days. Most patients will NOT be scheduled with every specialty that is offered. The triaging physician will make this decision and you will be scheduled based on their recommendation.
  4. Depending on the testing that will need to be scheduled, you could spend anywhere from 1 hour to 6 hours on campus. The medical office coordinator will go over the itinerary and requested testing with you. In most cases, this will allow for your doctor’s visit, testing and/or consultations to occur on that day.
  5. When you arrive at the clinic, we will take, your insurance card and any other records you may bring.
  6. Our doctors will examine you and discuss treatment options with you. Depending on the records reviewed and recommendations of the triage process, you may also undergo testing, including electromyography (EMG), CT scans, muscle MRI, and pulmonary function tests. Although we may order a muscle biopsy, this will not occur at the time of your first visit. Your physician will discuss the process with you.
  7. We are dedicated to providing care for patients with myositis and toxic myopathies. In many cases, we will continue to follow you closely with regular return visits. However, we are also available to provide recommendations to your local neurologist or rheumatologist, particularly if you live far from our Center. For those patients who do not have myositis, we will try to refer you to an appropriate specialist at Johns Hopkins or elsewhere.
